Who these plans are for

Over the subsidy limit

If your household earns more than about 400% of the poverty guideline, you usually won't get help paying marketplace premiums. Private plans are worth comparing.

Self-employed or 1099

No employer plan to fall back on. Ivan compares options that fit how you work and what you can budget each month.

Between jobs

Left a job and waiting for new coverage to start? A short-term plan can bridge the gap, if you're approved.

Retiring before 65

Stepped away from work early? Ivan helps you compare options for the years before you turn 65.

An honest comparison

Each option trades something. Here's what each one covers, what it doesn't, and who it tends to fit. Ivan will go through the details for your household.

ACA bronze plan

A marketplace plan with the lowest monthly cost tier

Covers

  • All essential health benefits: doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency care, prescriptions, maternity and mental health care
  • Preventive care at no cost to you
  • A yearly limit on what you pay out of pocket

Doesn't cover / trade-offs

  • A high deductible: you pay most routine costs until you reach it
  • You can sign up only during open enrollment or after a qualifying life event
  • Doctor networks can be narrow, depending on the plan

Fits who

  • People with ongoing health conditions or regular prescriptions
  • Households likely to get help paying premiums
  • Anyone who wants every federal protection

Short-term medical

A temporary plan for a limited term

Covers

  • Doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency care and surgery, up to the plan's limits
  • Can start as soon as the next day, if approved
  • You can apply any time of year

Doesn't cover / trade-offs

  • Conditions you had before the plan starts, in most plans
  • Often no maternity, preventive, mental health or prescription benefits
  • Benefit maximums apply, and you can be turned down after health questions

Fits who

  • Healthy people between jobs or waiting for other coverage
  • People who missed open enrollment
  • Anyone who needs a short bridge, not a long-term plan

HPG + supplements

A fixed-benefit health plan, paired with accident, critical illness or hospital coverage

Covers

  • Set cash amounts for covered services such as doctor visits, tests, hospital stays and surgery
  • Supplements can add cash benefits after an accident, heart attack, stroke or cancer diagnosis
  • You can apply any time of year

Doesn't cover / trade-offs

  • The set amounts can be far less than the bill, and you pay the difference
  • It doesn't meet the federal standards marketplace plans meet
  • Limits apply to conditions you already have, and you can be turned down after health questions

Fits who

  • Healthy adults who earn too much for marketplace savings
  • People who want predictable cash benefits and can handle some out-of-pocket risk
  • Households that want a layer of protection for bigger events

IMPORTANT: This is a short-term, limited-duration policy,
NOT comprehensive health coverage

This is a temporary limited policy that has fewer benefits and Federal protections than other types of health insurance options, like those on HealthCare.gov.

Frequently asked questions

What about pre-existing conditions?

Short-term and HPG plans usually exclude or limit care for conditions you had before the plan starts, and you can be turned down based on your health history. Marketplace plans can't turn you down or charge you more because of your health. If you have an ongoing condition, tell Ivan — he'll show you which option actually protects you.

When does coverage start?

You choose a start date on your application. Coverage begins on that date only if the insurance company approves your application. Many short-term plans can start as soon as the next day, if approved.

Do I have to wait for open enrollment?

Not for short-term or HPG plans — you can apply any time of year. Marketplace plans have an open enrollment period each year, starting November 1, or a special enrollment period after events like losing job-based coverage. Ivan helps with both.

Can I cancel?

Yes. You can cancel a short-term or HPG plan by contacting the insurance company. Your plan's terms set when coverage ends and whether any premium is refunded. Ivan can walk you through the steps.
